Derek Holzer vs Jelena Glazova 19th session by Holzer vs Glazova

Derek Holzer vs Jelena Glazova 13th session by Holzer vs Glazova

Playing next Friday with Jelena Glazova in Riga. Had two really great sets, one in Zagreb last week and one last night in Tallinn, with the “new” setup: soundbox, found objects and analog mini-synth, discovering the possibilities of how they work together. Looking forward to mixing with Jelena’s amazing processed vocals.

At the Estonian gig, something in the PA starting smelling quite smokey, despite the fact that everything sounded fine, and afterward many people told me what kind of emotions that smell triggered for them. Interesting… but I don’t want to make a career out of smoking PAs!

In case anyone is curious, Holzer Sr.’s film project Kickstarter has 18 hours to go and has been a success. He flies to Marietta, Georgia on the 14th to have the film transferred to digital and after that I can get to work on the soundtrack. Should be an curious collaboration.

I have absolutely no work lined up for next month, which should make me a bit nervous. But I’ve decided to spend less time online, build some new soundbox-type instruments and get busy pushing them. Please get in contact if you would like something custom.

Machine Deva: An Experimental Art Film

“Machine Deva’s gonna be an unusual experience, it’s someplace between looking at cave paintings in a hand-held home movie that I’ve brought into my dreams.” –Steve Holzer

A distinguished gentleman who I happen to have known my entire life is busy creating his latest camera-less film, and has invited me to help create the soundtrack. He has a Kickstarter page for the project, with a very reasonable goal of $3000 set. He’s halfway there and has only 11 more days to do it. So if you are one of those aspiring patron-of-the-arts-types, you could do worse than to get on board this project. Please drop by and have a look!

Electric Spring

Posted in Announcement on February 12th, 2012 by admin

In what seems to be a time-honored tradition, I’m staying up all night before a 6am flight to my Electric Spring gig making new instruments. These I have named after both the festival and the resonant coil microphones they employ. Each one is a beautiful drone machine by itself, and when placed together they have a natural tendency to harmonize. This time I actually managed a line-out to connect to the mixer as well.

The performance is likely to be a live version of Nonlinearity III, as seen in this video, using all three SoundBoxes instead of clever editing to make the polyphony. My first SoundBox from Nonlinearity I may also make an appearance…

These three new Electric Spring SoundBoxes became available for sale after the concert in Huddersfield, 15 February 2012. Number one of three is already sold. Inquire via the Contact page.

Aarhus Wrapup

Posted in Announcement on December 6th, 2011 by admin

DKJ and Splab present an evening of esoteric drones, nonlinear distortion and time travel:
MACUMBISTA (us/de) vs KRISHVE (dk)
20:00 Friday 09 December 2011 * SPLAB Mejlgade 32 – 34, 8000 Århus C

with thanks to det jyske musikkonservatorium

The Wrapup

After four months of a lovely little house, a good studio and a decent paycheck (all in the same city!!!), the jig is up in a few short weeks. By the time my residency here in Aarhus concludes, I will have done 5 workshops, played 5 concerts, built more than a half dozen sound boxes and a couple synthesizer modules, produced one sound-video and recorded more hours of synthesizer improvisations than I will ever have time to edit.

Here’s Tore “Origami” Boe, mi amigo noruego and proud owner of a brand new SoundBox during his evening for DJM/DIEM:

I leave Aarhus on 21 December, spend a few short days in Berlin and leave almost immediately for Riga, Mooste, Tartu, Tallinn and Helsinki. I had initially planned to do one more Rainforest piece here in Aarhus before I left, but it had to be postponed until the spring. So I will do an informal improvisation with Krishve at SPLAB as a going-away of sorts. Wish us luck and see you all in 2012!!!

Two Aarhus Events

Posted in Announcement on October 26th, 2011 by admin

NEANDERTHAL ELECTRONICS
Presentation by DIEM students of Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium
Friday 28 Oct 20.00, Rhythmic Hall
Skovgaardsgade 2C Aarhus DK

Over 5 days, students of the Danish Institute for Electro/Acoustic Music under the direction of Derek Holzer learned how to design and build their own personal, customized primitive noise synthesizers using simple objects from our modern environment such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, LEDs, integrated circuit chips and other found materials.

Each is a tiny world of its own, using primitive analog computers in combination with feedback, sensors and audio inputs to create a unique sound. Even from the same plan, no two are alike! This workshop concludes with a group performance in the Rhythmic Hall of the Conservatory, and an invitation to the audience to experiment with each of the instruments which have been created.

SOUNDBOXES WORKSHOP
Hosted by Ljud.dk
26-27 November, Huset, Aarhus
Register: christian AT.THE.DOMAN ljud.dk
Final Presentation 27 November, location+time TBA
There are 10 places, cost DKK 200, reservations strongly recommended!
Supported by Kulturforvaltningen, Aarhus Kommune

Discover the hidden sonic qualities of objects from our everyday world
in this two day workshop, combining the arts of electronics, noise,
sculpture and collage. The basic elements of this workshop are a wooden
box, a speaker, a small audio amplifier, some distortion and a contact
microphone. To this, brave box-builders will add their own found
objects, graphics, images, memories and ideas to create a unique
electroacoustic cabinet of curiosities.

TIMETABLE

Day One: Introduction to simple noise/electroacoustic electronics,
circuit soldering.

Day Two: Box-building, decoration and collage, experimentation with
found objects as sound sources.

Final Presentation: All participants will present their finished
soundboxes to the public at the end of the second day!

Regnskog FullPull 2011 documentation

Posted in Documentation on October 2nd, 2011 by admin

Regnskog 2011//Full Pull is a contemporary re-interpretation of David Tudor’s series of compositions from the 1970′s entitled “Rainforest”. It uses various types of sonic transducers to play live sounds through a selection of resonant objects suspended in the performance space

The Regnskog installation+performance was created by Mads Bech Paluszewski, Derek Holzer, Kati Linek, Anders Børup and Allan Møller Skov for the Full Pull Festival 2011 Malmö. The initial workshop took place 23-29 September 2011, with live actions on 30 September – 02 October.

We would like to thank Mathias Holmberg of Full Pull, VTM RIV AB, the amazing crew at Stapelbädden and Louise Buenafe Mistén for their support during this project. Photos by Derek Holzer and Kati Linek, audio recording by Derek Holzer.

DIEMelektro performance

Posted in Announcement on September 13th, 2011 by admin

Live improvisation for analog modular synthesizer, speakers and room.

DIEM ElekTro: Derek Holzer
Wednesday, Sep. 21, 2011 Concert, 8:00 PM
Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium. Rytmisk sal. Aarhus DK

Several years ago, I largely abandoned the digital sound world to spend time building a modular analog synthesizer which reinterprets and hybridizes the forms and functions of the famous Serge and Buchla systems of the 1970s. In my largely improvisational performances, I summon the chaotic, generative powers of this machine to explore the physical affects of volume, frequency and complexity within a given space. For fans of Maryanne Amacher, Bernard Parmegiani, Eliane Radigue and Slayer.

Regnskog 2011 Full Pull

Posted in Announcement on September 13th, 2011 by admin

Regnskog 2011//Full Pull is a contemporary re-interpretation of David Tudor’s series of compositions from the 1970′s entitled “Rainforest”. It uses various types of sonic transducers to play live sounds through various resonant objects in the performance space, as well as through architectural features of the space itself. Additionally, an 8×8 matrix mixer allows the sound from any of the performers to be sent to any of the objects, making the whole space a an orchestra of resonant voices to be played.

Regnskog 2011//Full Pull will be developed in a workshop format with up to 8 participants over a period of several days. The resulting work should shift between relatively static installation-like moments and performative sections where the artists seek new relationships with the objects and each other. The audience is free to move around the performance space, engage in conversations and explore the resonant objects, thus adding new life to the rainforest.

On Friday 30 Sept 2011 at 20.00, Regnskog 2011//Full Pull will be presented in a concert situation at Stapelbäddsparken, Stapelbäddsgatan 3 Malmö SE. The following afternoon, Saturday 01 Oct 2011, it can be seen as an installation between the hours of 12.00-19.00.

Regnskog 2011//Full Pull is coordinated by Derek Holzer and Mads Bech Paluszewski for the Full Pull Festival.
