Sommercamp Workstation workshop cluster B<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Re:Discovering Sound — an Instrument-building Workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n

The process of instrument creation sits in direct opposition to the
\nthat of instrument virtuosity. Rather than bend one\u2019s artistic
\nexpression around the rigid, predefined form of a traditional music
\ninstrument, imagination takes flight and new possibilities are created.
\nLike Neanderthals or small children, we are astounded that the sounds
\nwe have invented are actually our own.<\/p>\n

This collection of three simultaneous workshop nodes-DEERHORNS<\/strong>, HALLDOROPHONES<\/strong> and ACOUSTIC LAPTOPS<\/strong>-explores
\nthe use of radio waves, the electromagnetism of the human body, strings
\nunder tension, the resonance of hollow structures and various found
\nobjects to invent new types of sound instruments. Each of these deeply
\npersonal creations is free to live in ignorance of any musical
\ntheories, thus having the potential for both sonic and visual
\nexcitement.<\/p>\n

Participants may choose which node of the workshop they would like
\nto start with, however cross-talk and collaboration between these nodes
\nis encouraged. The workshop will end with a presentation\/performance on
\nthe final Saturday of the summercamp, and an \u201copen day\u201d on the Sunday
\nwhere the general public is invited to hands-on exploration of the
\ninstruments which have been created.<\/p>\n

Workshop nodes:<\/em><\/p>\n

1] DEERHORNS with Ciat Lonbarde\/Peter Blasser<\/strong><\/p>\n

Without musical intention, there is still your body intention, and how
\nyou place it in space. Firmness reflects, and so do all your other
\nmovements. The Deerhorn project, created by electro-mystic Ciat
\nLonbarde\/Peter Blasser, is aimed at creating new instruments out of the
\noriginal radio Theremin concept. Participants will collaborate in the
\nconstruction of a playable, site-specific installation in the large
\nhall of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.<\/p>\n

2] HALLDOROPHONES with Halldor Ulfarsson<\/strong><\/p>\n

Halldorophones are electro-acoustic string instruments which send the
\nsound from their pickups back into it\u2019s body. When the sound has
\ntraveled full-circle, it vibrates the strings again and creates an
\ninfinite sustain which the player can affect in different ways.
\nParticipants in this workshop will use found or constructed hollow
\nforms along with simple pickups, amps and loudspeakers to create their
\nown resonant instruments.<\/p>\n

3] ACOUSTIC LAPTOPS with Tore Honor\u00e9 B\u00f8e<\/strong><\/p>\n

For many years, Tore \u201cOrigami Boe\u201d has been creating, playing and
\npassing on his \u201cacoustic laptops\u201d: a selection of wood boxes with
\nvarious tiny objects attached; springs, stones, metal, rubber, string,
\nneedles, memorabilia – amplified by old-school contact mikes and
\npick-ups. Participants with & without musical interests will be
\ninvited to create their own unique acoustic laptop to start touching
\nthe sounds and drawing pictures in free air.<\/p>\n

\nFacilitation by Derek Holzer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Derek Holzer\u2019s interest in new forms of sound creation and performance
\nhave led him from computer programming in Pure Data to Theremins,
\n\u201cNeanderthal electronics\u201d, long-string instruments and the
\npossibilities of visual or drawn opto-electronic sound. For this
\nworkshop, his main concern will be the synthesis of the different
\napproaches to instrument creation being presented.<\/p>\n
